PEER COUNSELING
The Peer Counseling Program provides emotional support to persons 60 years of age and older. Trained and supervised volunteer counselors make home visits to accommodate homebound individuals to offer them emotional guidance while they are experiencing health problems, grief, depression, anxiety and feelings of isolation. Often, a visit from a volunteer counselor who is close to the consumer’s age makes it easier to face some of the difficult issues involved with the aging process.
Senior Peer Counselors are individuals from the community who are trained and supervised by a mental health professional to provide nonjudgmental, emotional support. The supervision should be ongoing. It is also necessary for the volunteer counselor to provide their own transportation to the consumer’s home.
